Throughout history Democracy has been the most uniform, the most ancient, and the most permanent tendency of man. There is nothing new about democracy. Since the beginning of time, every man has had a tendency to acquire, first of all, life. Most every man has some fear of death, and to stay alive is a natural instinct. Second, man has had a tendency to acquire liberty. For what is life without it? No man desires to be told what to do or how he must live. Third, man wants to be happy. Happiness comes in many forms. Some find happiness in nature, and spiritual things -others in material things.
Life, liberty, and happiness - these things God has given to me. These things Democracy has given to me. The real American idea is not that every man shall be on a level with every other man, but that everyone shall have liberty to be what God made him to be. Well, just what did God intend for man to be? There is only one answer - God intended man to be an individual. That other person cannot think my thoughts, or speak my words. He cannot do my work, or have my sins. He cannot accept my honors, nor can he pay my debts.
Individualism is the very life of a democratic government. Democracy is goverrnent of the people, by the people, and for the people. The individual must take part and participate in government. There can be no democracy unless it is a dynamic democracy. When our people cease to participate - to take an active part- then democracy shall vanish. Our society will become mute, demoralized, lost souls.
As a student there isn't much I can do, by any direct means, to preserve democracy. But I can see that I prepare myself in a way that I will be both qualified and capable of taking part in government in the future. I should train myself so I will be capable of making intelligent decisions, knowing what I want, what I believe in, in order to protect my country as well as myself against any dominating power.
